AMITAYAS (long life)

Provenance”Tibetan (or Nepal ) late 18th Century

Size: 5 inches?

Material: Gilt bronze with leather cladding to consecration plate at base.

This is a diminutive yet charming sculpture of the Buddha Amitayus (Ayush in Mongolian)  as the Buddha of Long Life, good fortune and wisdom. He is depicted as red in colour, holding a life vase brimming with the nectar of immortality and is the "enjoyment body" of Buddha Amitahba (who is the "emanation body").  Amitayas is frequently invoked in  Mongolia and Tibet - especially in practices relating to longevity and preventing an untimely death. The sculpture carries traces of puja offering and is sealed and consecrated at the base. It is obviously a piece that has served generations of devout Buddhist practitioners and would be great asset to any home altar.
