Unique Pure Silver Mongolian Fertility Goddess

This diminutive antique sculpture dates from the 17-18th century and is imbued with the magic of Mongolian folk belief and maternal energy. This totally unique piece is cast in pure silver, the element symbolic of feminine moon wisdom, and is in the form of the compassionate goddess Tara holding a child on her knee. It evokes a deity worship that would infuse the practitioner with the power to conceive and nurture through loving kindness and compassion. Such an item would have been part of an altar setting or even worn as an amulet to summons the blessing of the gods in the mortal acts of conception and parenting. Although crudely sculpted this fertility icon speaks strongly of the confluence of pagan imagery and himalayan buddhism as manifest and practised across provincial Mongolia and China. The Chinese influence is apparent given the similarity between this iconography and the portrayal of the Guanyin fertility goddess. Significantly this piece is still sealed with a consecration plate and presumably encapsulates auspicious herbs and blessings.
