Wooden sculpture of a "hermaphroditic hell being" in an obvious state of arousal goading an animal metaphor of negative affliction. Mid-late 19th century. Probably once part of a diorama in a wrathful shrine that amplified the negative afflictions for sentient beings. The animal, which is probably a pig/boar, is having intercourse with a human figure representing obstacles, who lies face up on a sun cushion on a lotus base. The pig ,together with the cock and the snake are representations of the "three poisons" of greed, hatred and delusion which fuel negative actions and keep beings trapped in samsara.
