BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI

Provenance: Inner Mongolia (Chinese) 16-17 Century

Size: 8.25 inches

Material: Bronze (high copper content)

This a splendid ancient Chinese sculpture of the Buddha Śākyamuni or Shakyamuni ("sage of the Shakyas) – he is the key figure in Buddhism, and accounts of his life, discourses, and monastic rules are believed by Buddhists to have been summarized after his death and memorized by his followers. This portrait exudes a sense of natural great peace and shows the Buddha “touching the earth: as at the time of realisation and enlightenment.

The Buddha is the embodiment of enlightened being and his teachings of the middle way and five-fold path are central to Buddhist philosophy across the world. Various collections of teachings attributed to Gautama were passed down by oral tradition and first committed to writing about 400 years later. Early Western scholarship tended to accept the biography of the Buddha presented in the Buddhist scriptures as largely historical, but currently "scholars are increasingly reluctant to make unqualified claims about the historical facts of the Buddha's life and teachings.
